Srinagar (summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir)

Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated in the centre of the Kashmir valley on the banks of the Jhelum river and is surrounded by four districts and Ladakh UT.

The name Srinagar is derived from the conjoining of the two words in Sanskrit, 'Sri' implying 'lakshmi' and 'Nagar' Implying 'city'. It is the belief of some prominent historians that Srinagar came up as a city under the rule of Ashoka, a Pandava ruler.
